Paris-based designer Yohan Serfaty has unveiled his menswear designs as part of his Y Project label for autumn/winter 2011. Born in Casablanca in 1966, Serfaty studied political science before following his call for fashion and creativity by interning at several French couture houses during his summer holidays. He started his own line of womenswear fashion in 2008, and has been developing a markedly personal style that involves mixing materials such as natural fabrics with leather to produce simple and clean garments in neutral colours.
In 2010, Serfaty launched Y Project, a new gender-neutral menswear sartorial experiment that stems from the assumption that the fashion industry, and men’s fashion in particular, is in full creative renewal when it comes to the identity of the designer and the products that he or she produces. With this premise in mind, Y Project has focussed on creating garments that are not intended to be purchased or worn according to fads but as perennial high-quality goods
Each Y Project collection is created with the intention to be timeless, with some details or their construction evolving over time, while staying faithful to the same general aesthetics and creative principals. For autumn/winter 2011, Y Project’s collection includes thick knitwear and real and fake leather, and stark details such as high collars, asymmetrical zippers, rigid lines, and hoods that evoke an image of male urban warriors.
